ലോകത്തിന്റെ പല കോണുകളിലും നിലവിലുള്ള വൈവിദ്ധ്യമാർന്ന ആരാധനാ സമ്പ്രദായങ്ങളിൽ പൊതുവായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ദേവതാ സങ്കൽപ്പമാണ് നാഗ/ സർപ്പങ്ങൾ എന്നത്. കേരളത്തിലും നാഗാരാധന പുരാതനകാലം മുതൽക്കുതന്നെ ഏറെ പ്രചാരത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മാത്രവുമല്ല കേരളം ഒരു സർപ്പ ഭൂമി കൂടിയാണ്.  കേവലം ഒരു ഈശ്വരാരാധന എന്നതിനപ്പുറം സർപ്പക്കാവുകൾ പാരിസ്ഥിതിക സന്തുലിതാവസ്ഥയെ ഊട്ടിയുറപ്പിക്കുന്ന സങ്കേതങ്ങൾ കൂടിയാണ്. മരങ്ങളും കുളങ്ങളും വ്യാപകമായി നശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ വിശേഷാൽ കാവുകളുടെ പ്രാധാന്യം വളരെ വലുതാണ്.
            പ്രകൃതിയുടെ അവിഭാജ്യ ഘടകങ്ങളായ നാഗങ്ങളുടെ അതിവിശേഷപ്പെട്ടതും അനുപമമായതുമായ ഒരു ആരാധനാ സങ്കേതമാണ് ശ്രീപുരം നാഗകാളീ സമേത അഷ്ടനാഗേശ്വരക്കാവ്.
